Financial Benefits:
Pioneer Fellowship 2023 in Switzerland will cover all the expenditures of selected applicants. Successful candidates will be awarded a lump sum of 150’000 CHF to cover the candidate’s salary costs and other costs to support the project. The suitable salary level depends on the candidate’s level of education and other costs expected in the project. As scientific employees at ETH (Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeitende), Pioneer Fellows will be employed on an allowance.

The fellowship allowance is always 150’000 CHF, regardless of the number of candidates and the level of education, and cannot be subsidized by other research funds or professorships. Combinations with most additional external funds, such as prize money or Innosuisse funds, are permitted. It is not possible to combine the Pioneer Fellowship allowance with other personal allowances linked to an employment contract, such as the BRIDGE Proof of Concept grant.

- Measurement costs at facilities like FIRST, Scope, EPIC…
- Software certificates for specialized software not yet covered by Research Group.
- Costs of pre-clinical trials
- Contract out of activities, such as writing websites, software, market reports, external consultants, etc.
Travel/Field Expenses & Industry Fairs:
- Industry engagement or partnership events (eg Bio Europe, Hannover Messe) Customer visits, presentations to investors…
- All expenditures expressly dedicated to the project and not for private purposes.
- All expenditure receipts will need to submitted to the Finance Department to justify your expenses.
Tuition Fees for Certificate of Advanced Studies:
- A tuition fee of CHF 9’200 can paid by a direct allowance from CAS ETH for a single applicant in Entrepreneurial Leadership in Technology Ventures (CAS ELTV) as enrollment is obligatory.
- Enrollment of second applicant is optional if a team of 2 persons applies. If they choose to apply, ieLab will contribute 50% of the tuition fee.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Applicants must have a master’s or doctoral degree from ETH Zurich.
- A team of 1-2 entrepreneurs who want to commercialize the results of their research (master’s or doctoral thesis or postdoctoral research) at ETH.
- A promising business case
- A project where the company is not so far involve.
- The project and the team are fully sustain by the host professor at ETH.
Application Material:
The application must written by the applicant and must be go together with by a letter of support from his or her host professor. The host professor essential holds an ETH position for the entire duration of the proposed Pioneer Fellowship and necessity provide the support and infrastructure provided within the professorship free of charge.
The application shall include:
- A short-term project summary that should review the planned activities, market situation and innovation potential. This summary must not hold confidential information
- A detailed explanation of the idea based on the research results of a master’s or doctoral thesis at ETH Zurich. Special importance placed on innovative aspects of efficiency and customer benefits, product or service. This includes some proof of market relevance, a basic business model with initial details on a commercialization strategy, and technical and market analysis. clear applications and software (IP) made available for licensing to pioneer fellowships as well as future spin-offs, etc. Milestones and more in detail Explanation of expenditures. - A complete list of financial requirements
- Applicant’s full CV including a list of relevant publications and a short-term outline of their career goals
- Disclosure of potential conflicts of interest (if any) to both applicants and the host professor.
- A signed letter of support from the host professor, explaining why and how s/he wishes to support the applicant and how s/he values the proposed project idea. Describing infrastructure made manageable.
- 2-minute-long presentation video of project and motivation. Essential submitted via Polybox in MP4 format.
Application Deadline:
Candidates can apply two times in Year for ETH Pioneer Fellowship Program 2022-23. For first opening the deadline is 1st March and for 2nd opening deadline is 1st September every year.
